GSA -Hydrogeology division
The Hydrologist positions at USGS Headquarters Water Mission Area application are now live. These positions are being advertised for 3 divisions within WATER. We would suggest you apply for both positions as you see fit. One requires a physical and other doesn’t. We have the ability to hire 10 people on these announcements as we are growing our Divisions.
Quick notes:
- We will be hiring hydrologists and various other scientists approximately every 4 months so this will not be your only chance for an opportunity to work within the greatest agency!
- I would also suggest applying to all GS levels/types (public & federal), if you qualify, to increase your chances of making it to a short list
- Note we are limited the applications to 100 applicants, and 10 days whichever comes first. Once the limit is reached, the announcement will close. Please apply as soon as you can so you make it within the 100 applicants.
- There is also a Physical Scientist Cluster hire coming out in January 2023 within WATER.
- Review all the notes in the email below AND please read carefully for job information in the announcements.
- Please make sure you upload ALL documents as to not disqualify yourself!
The announcements have been posted. The announcement numbers are USGS-SAC-11228661-DE-MB and USGS-SAC-11777548-ST-MB, or you may access the job announcement through the following links:
DE – No Field Work: www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/696617700

The announcements have been posted. The announcement numbers are USGS-SAC-11774179-DE-MB and USGS-SAC-11774180-ST-MB, or you may access the job announcement through the following links:
DE – Field Work: www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/696620000

The announcements opens on Friday, December 23rd, 2022 and will close on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023.
Here are a few reminders to pass along to any interested applicants so they don’t inadvertently disqualify themselves from further consideration:
– *IMPORTANT* Since this is a professional series position, there is a positive education requirement. This means that if they don’t have the required coursework, they will be disqualified from further consideration. They should submit ALL copies of their unofficial transcripts. This is especially important if they’ve attended multiple schools. Their current school doesn’t always list the transfer classes out. The transcripts are needed to confirm that they have completed the required coursework for the basic education requirement. ALL applicants regardless of whether they are current USGS, or whether they are currently in the series MUST do this.
– If they have completed their degree requirements, but their transcripts have not yet been updated, applicants may submit a letter from the school indicating that they have completed their degree requirements along with a copy of their most recent unofficial transcripts.
– *NEW REQUIREMENT* Applicant’s are now required to submit a copy of their Employee Performance Appraisal Plan (EPAP) when applying to USGS-Wide announcements.
– SF-50’s are required for ALL merit promotion announcements (if they have competitive status). Regardless of whether they are a current USGS employee or NOT. It also does NOT matter if they are currently in the series. SF-50’s show that they have status and meet the who may apply requirements. The SF-50 needs to show their current position, grade level, and current step and duty location.
– Resumes should also include a month and year, along with their relevant work experience underneath each period of employment. Their resumes or CV’s should contain enough details regarding their work experience for us to determine whether they have the specialized experience or not.
– If they have current or prior federal service, they should list the grade levels. If this is left out, it won’t necessarily get them rated out, but it may help them get rated in easier.
– They MUST submit ALL required documentation prior to the close of the announcement. All documents must be legible! They can always e-mail the contact person in the vacancy announcement to confirm that their documents all uploaded correctly. Sometimes the documents submitted are blurry and really hard to read.
Applicants may also access the HELP section of the USAjobs site. It goes into more detail regarding the federal hiring process. www.usajobs.gov/Help
The information provided above is already in the announcement, and some of it can be found on the USAjobs help section (which is also provided in the announcement). It is included here as the Federal hiring process can be confusing to those who are applying to it for the first time.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM NOAA:
MAINSTEM
Minority Achievement Influenced by the NWS in Science Technology Engineering and Math
The Lower Mississippi River Forecast Center (LMRFC) is an agency of the National Weather Service (NWS) and is located in Slidell, Louisiana. We are co-located with the New Orleans/Baton Rouge Weather Forecast Office. LMRFC provides daily river forecasts for locations on the lower Mississippi River and its tributaries. This includes over 200 forecast locations across a 210,000 square mile area.
The LMRFC has an interdisciplinary staff. We have employees with degrees in various types of engineering, geology, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), meteorology, and even business management. Many of our staff have multiple degrees in various fields.
MAINSTEM serves as a hydrology and meteorology educational outreach program specifically designed to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) achievement among minorities in the LMRFC hydrologic service area.
The rising percentage of minorities and women found among college students majoring in STEM-related fields suggests a large and ever-growing pool of untapped potential. These talented individuals will provide an unparalleled resource in the search for the next generation of STEM professionals, especially for multi-disciplinary organizations like the National Weather Service.
MAINSTEM provides support and coordinates activities for minority students by com-municating educational opportunities in hydrology and meteorology. This includes, but is not limited to, in-person STEM activities and educational presentations, remote out-reach opportunities, assistance for teachers in developing topics for their students, re-mote or in-person National Weather Service (NWS) office tours and weather balloon launches.
LMRFC believes that inspiring young minorities to take part in STEM activities and ed-ucation is of extreme importance in continuing to build new careers in hydrology and meteorology. We hope to shepherd an increasing number of young minorities toward water and weather science degrees and careers.
Be sure to check out the attached resources for teachers, students, and MAINSTEM outreach personnel. If you would like the LMRFC MAINSTEM team to provide water and weather activities, education, or virtual field trips for your students, please contact us using the information below. We look forward to hearing from you.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP
The U.S. Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) is seeking to fill a one-year appointment with a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sustainable Groundwater-Irrigated Agroecosystems by August 31, 2021. The opportunity is located at the National Sedimentation Laboratory in the historic town of Oxford located in the wooded hills of north Mississippi. Oxford has a small college-town atmosphere with excellent public schools, performing arts, fine restaurants, and bookstores. The urban attractions of Memphis, Tennessee, are 70 miles to the north.
The research will address the feasibility of artificial recharge of the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVAA) in the Delta region of Mississippi through a pilot project combining riverbank filtration and aquifer storage to capture surface water for direct injection into the aquifer. Current and planned water conservation and irrigation best management practices are projected to not fully alleviate the long-term depletion of groundwater in the region. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) has been identified as the most likely technology to reduce or potentially reverse groundwater depletion. Construction of the facility by USDA-ARS is complete and full operation began April 2021.
Under the guidance of DR. ANDREW O’REILLY, the participant will collaborate with USDA-ARS, U.S. Geological Survey, and the University of Mississippi research scientists and participate in all phases of field-based data collection, operation, and evaluation of the pilot project. This is an opportunity to get involved on the ground floor of development of cutting-edge, scientific technology and innovative MAR solutions to support an agriculture industry in the Delta that produces over $1.5 billion in agricultural commodities annually while also sustaining the region’s agroecosystems and natural resources.
The opportunity details can be found here:
