ANNOUNCEMENT FROM NOAA:
MAINSTEM
Minority Achievement Influenced by the NWS in Science Technology Engineering and Math
The Lower Mississippi River Forecast Center (LMRFC) is an agency of the National Weather Service (NWS) and is located in Slidell, Louisiana. We are co-located with the New Orleans/Baton Rouge Weather Forecast Office. LMRFC provides daily river forecasts for locations on the lower Mississippi River and its tributaries. This includes over 200 forecast locations across a 210,000 square mile area.
The LMRFC has an interdisciplinary staff. We have employees with degrees in various types of engineering, geology, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), meteorology, and even business management. Many of our staff have multiple degrees in various fields.
MAINSTEM serves as a hydrology and meteorology educational outreach program specifically designed to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) achievement among minorities in the LMRFC hydrologic service area.
The rising percentage of minorities and women found among college students majoring in STEM-related fields suggests a large and ever-growing pool of untapped potential. These talented individuals will provide an unparalleled resource in the search for the next generation of STEM professionals, especially for multi-disciplinary organizations like the National Weather Service.
MAINSTEM provides support and coordinates activities for minority students by com-municating educational opportunities in hydrology and meteorology. This includes, but is not limited to, in-person STEM activities and educational presentations, remote out-reach opportunities, assistance for teachers in developing topics for their students, re-mote or in-person National Weather Service (NWS) office tours and weather balloon launches.
LMRFC believes that inspiring young minorities to take part in STEM activities and ed-ucation is of extreme importance in continuing to build new careers in hydrology and meteorology. We hope to shepherd an increasing number of young minorities toward water and weather science degrees and careers.
Be sure to check out the attached resources for teachers, students, and MAINSTEM outreach personnel. If you would like the LMRFC MAINSTEM team to provide water and weather activities, education, or virtual field trips for your students, please contact us using the information below. We look forward to hearing from you.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP
The U.S. Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) is seeking to fill a one-year appointment with a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sustainable Groundwater-Irrigated Agroecosystems by August 31, 2021. The opportunity is located at the National Sedimentation Laboratory in the historic town of Oxford located in the wooded hills of north Mississippi. Oxford has a small college-town atmosphere with excellent public schools, performing arts, fine restaurants, and bookstores. The urban attractions of Memphis, Tennessee, are 70 miles to the north.
The research will address the feasibility of artificial recharge of the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVAA) in the Delta region of Mississippi through a pilot project combining riverbank filtration and aquifer storage to capture surface water for direct injection into the aquifer. Current and planned water conservation and irrigation best management practices are projected to not fully alleviate the long-term depletion of groundwater in the region. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) has been identified as the most likely technology to reduce or potentially reverse groundwater depletion. Construction of the facility by USDA-ARS is complete and full operation began April 2021.
Under the guidance of DR. ANDREW O’REILLY, the participant will collaborate with USDA-ARS, U.S. Geological Survey, and the University of Mississippi research scientists and participate in all phases of field-based data collection, operation, and evaluation of the pilot project. This is an opportunity to get involved on the ground floor of development of cutting-edge, scientific technology and innovative MAR solutions to support an agriculture industry in the Delta that produces over $1.5 billion in agricultural commodities annually while also sustaining the region’s agroecosystems and natural resources.
The opportunity details can be found here:
