The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the first step in gaining a professional engineer license – recognized by employers and clients as a sign of technical competence
The FE exam is a comprehensive test of the knowledge you have gained throughout your undergraduate education. It is administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing professional licensure for engineers and surveyors.
Why is it important?
Many employers look favourably on hiring registered professional engineers, even if it’s not specifically required. Many governmental and consulting jobs require professional licensure.
Who can take the exam?
Ole Miss graduates and current seniors in civil engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, geological engineering or mechanical engineering are eligible to sit for the exam.
How do I register for the FE exam?
Students must apply for enrollment as an engineering intern through the Mississippi Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers & Surveyors before they can take the FE exam.
Then, you’ll need to sign up for the FE exam on the NCEES website.
Should I wait to take the FE exam until I get a job – especially as it might not be in Mississippi?
You should take the FE Exam as soon as you think you are ready. All 50 states will honor your exam results. The Mississippi State Board of Licensure will provide your FE Exam results to the state where you would like to be registered as a Professional Engineer.
What is the exam’s format?
The computer-based FE exam contains 110 multiple-choice questions and takes around six hours in total.
